General Skilled Migration – State Nomination Update

Are you patiently waiting for new information from the Australian States and Territories on their new migration programs?

We know, it feels like FOREVER!  There is good news…. General Skilled Migration program is starting to get some action!

We already know that the Australian Government has set the 2024-25 permanent Migration Program at 185,000 places.  Around 70% of these allocations will be taken up by the Skill Stream, and the remaining 30% by the Family Stream.

The Government has increased the planning level for the State/Territory Nominated category to 33,000 visas, and the planning level for the Regional category to 33,000 visas for the 2024–25 Migration Program.

Together these categories, which both contain visas nominated by state and territory governments, account for 36% of the overall planning level and 50% of the Skill stream.  For migrants seeking State or Territory nomination, this is good news (as last year’s allocations were dismal to say the least!).

Each of the Australian States and Territories now know what their allocations are, and are developing their Migration Program settings, including nominations for Skilled – Nominated (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491).  And just to keep us all on our toes… each State and Territory has their own list of eligible occupations, criteria and application process.

Here’s a very quick snapshot of the current situation with each of the State and Territory programs:

Australian Capital Territory

ACT’s state and territory nomination program is open now.  The 2024-25 ACT state and territory nomination program visa allocation is 1,800 nomination places:

  • ACT provisional 491 nomination: 800 places
